Katarina Witt began ice skating at the age of five. It was not long before her talent became evident, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she was accepted into an institution specifically designed for children who have athletic talents. At this school she got to know the teacher Jutta Muler. Her breakthrough year was in 1982, when she placed second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught the attention of everyone at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic Success at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating in a highly competitive contest. The winner of the competition was a more competitive competition the following year. Her free skate was not a success, however her gold medal resulted from her performances during both compulsory figures (short program) and the compulsory figures. Witt was the first time a repeat winner in women's figure skating in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her accomplishments as a film actress. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she did not get a medal, she delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt's admission into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame was held in 1995.
